Gedi Ruins

The ruins of a 12th-century Swahili city hidden in the forest, welcomed by monkeys. An open-air museum with objects from across the world.

Itinerary

Departure from your accommodation to the Gedi archaeological site, a short distance from Watamu. On arrival, you enter lush baobab vegetation, welcomed by monkeys (bring bananas). Visit the remains of the great water cisterns, the two concentric defensive walls, the great mosque, the sultan's palace with tombs, and numerous residential buildings. The site museum preserves extraordinary objects: Chinese vases, European coins, Ming dynasty porcelain and Venetian beads, testament to the flourishing trade of the Swahili coast between the 12th and 17th centuries.
